We enable pupils to feel a sense of achievement by designing a Scheme of Work which is accessible and engaging for all pupils. This allows pupils and teachers to build positive and supportive relationships through creating a learning environment where pupils feel safe to contribute and experiment with language. By teaching differences of other languages and cultures, we seek to develop pupils’ respect for other cultures and values as well as being aware of what we have in common with other cultures.  

We encourage pupils to develop their curiosity in language learning by spotting grammatical patterns, identifying cognates and making sound–spelling links which help develop their independent thinking and problem-solving skills. We believe a solid grasp of grammar is key to successful language learning and embed this in our Schemes of Work across the 7-year journey. All pupils are equipped with knowledge organisers in KS3 which highlight the core knowledge and skills that we expect pupils to master. In KS4 pupils are equipped with work booklets which contain core vocabulary, key texts and exams style tasks to enable them to achieve their potential at GCSE. Pupils are encouraged to use language autonomously to express their own opinions. Pupils are also trained to use language spontaneously to develop their confidence and fluency. 

In the classroom, pupils are regularly given opportunities to complete extension tasks and go above and beyond the basic task set to challenge themselves. Outside the classroom, pupils have the opportunity to go to France and Spain to put into practice all the work that has gone into their learning and to further develop their language skills and knowledge of the target language country. We believe that language skills are essential for later life as they equip you with excellent transferable skills for life-long learning and the wider world.  As teachers we share our passion for languages and our various experiences abroad to encourage pupils to be aspirational.
