Why Study Applied Science?
The benefit of studying applied Science is it provides theoretical knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of science, preparing for progression to undergraduate study. It covers core topics of biology, physics and chemistry and will also help you to be equipped with relevant industry skills through researching, planning and performing a range of different laboratory investigations.
Where can this course lead?
Both the subject-specific knowledge, understanding and skills, and broader transferable skills developed through this qualification, will help you progress to further study in related areas such as:
• Biomedical Science degree
• Allied Health and Nursing degree
• Life Sciences degree
• Forensic Science degree
Course details
The course consists of two examined units (40 % of the course) and three practical assignment-based units (60 %). These topics can include analytical techniques in chemistry, environmental studies, forensic biology or medical physics. The qualification will also help develop transferable skills that can be used in both higher education and other life and work situations including:
• Communicating effectively with individuals or groups.
• Researching topic areas and recording research sources, then using them to interpret findings and present evidence.
• Presenting information, this will involve managing time and identifying aims, purpose, resources, methods.
• Problem solving when matching and analysing data
Who could be teaching me?
There are a wide variety of staff who may teach you this course, all of whom are experienced Science teachers. The course content covers all three science subjects and relevant practicals as part of the “fundamentals in science” unit, so you will be taught by teachers across the science disciplines.
