Sociology at Bishops’ Blue Coat enables students to explore and understand the society they live in — from the influence of family and education to the impact of crime, media, and social inequality. Through studying key sociological perspectives such as Functionalism, Marxism, Feminism, and Interactionism, students develop the ability to question assumptions, analyse evidence, and evaluate competing explanations of social behaviour.

Our curriculum introduces students to essential topics including the role of education in shaping life chances, the causes of crime and deviance, the changing nature of family life, and the influence of the media on identity and culture. Students also develop a strong grasp of sociological research methods, learning how data is collected, interpreted, and used to understand and address real-world issues.
