Remote Education Provision: Information for Parents

This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to pupils and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education where national or local restrictions require entire cohorts (or bubbles) to remain at home.

The remote curriculum: what is taught to pupils at home

At The Bishops’ High School our aim is to continue our full curriculum whether students are in school working from home or a combination of the two.  During a period of remote learning all students continue to follow their existing timetable for all subjects in line with their Learning Programmes.

What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of pupils being sent home?

When it is confirmed that a student needs to self-isolate for a period of time, parents and carers will be sent an email explaining expectations together with an overview booklet.  Students will then follow their existing timetable for the period of time they are away from school, allowing students to continue their current Learning Programme.

Each day, our online learning platform Satchel One (formerly called Show My Homework) will list the learning activities from all 5 of your child’s subjects (with 4 subjects on a Tuesday). Each student’s Subject Teacher is available within the timetabled hour to monitor engagement and support the daily tasks they have set on Satchel, in line with students’ Learning Programme.  Students can use the Satchel Comment Service within the hour to ask their teacher questions or request for further guidance. When the teacher feels it would beneficial for the whole class to have updated information on a task,  a whole class message will be sent, or further instructions will be clarified with the whole class – this is why it is important for students to try to work on Satchel within the timetabled hour.

We recognise the importance of teacher voice and connectivity and therefore there will be a variety of lesson approaches to support students, where teachers may have included narrated PowerPoints, audio guides to explain tasks, links to Recorded Lessons on Oak National Academy, video links and a variety of online learning platforms as resources. Again, we encourage students whenever they can, to complete the tasks within their timetabled hour so that if they need to, they can ask their teacher for help using the Satchel Comment Service.

Once students have completed the tasks to the best of their ability, they should have a go at any Extension Tasks  – this will ensure that there is sufficient work with stretch and challenge for each hour of learning. Assignments will require a form of submission of work from students so teachers can see how the quality of how the learning is progressing. For some subjects this could be a screen shot of the work completed within the hour (as opposed to a completed assignment).

It is important that students check the description of the task carefully before they start working through the task and if they have any questions that they message their teacher.

Some of our KS4 and KS5 lessons will be taught on Microsoft Teams. All students and teachers have received training in this, and so lessons can continue immediately using Microsoft Teams. Students can access this using the dedicated app (available for all devices) or can sign in to using their school email address ( and password.

Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we have needed to make some adaptations in some subjects. For example, in PE lessons, students may be set a series of challenges to develop their personal fitness. In practical subjects such as music, art or drama, work set may be a combination of practical work (where possible) and theory work.

Remote teaching and study time each day

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

We expect that remote education (including remote teaching and independent work) will take students 5 hours per day. This is in line with the number of lessons they would normally have in school and follows the guidance given by the government about remote education for secondary school pupils.

Accessing remote education

How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

Each day, our online learning platform Satchel One (formerly called Show My Homework) will list the learning activities from all 5 of your child’s subjects (with 4 subjects on a Tuesday). Each learning activity is set by your child’s Subject Teacher in line with the Learning Programme they are following for this half term.

Parents and Carers can log into Satchel One at  or use the Satchel One app and view:

  • The daily Remote Learning tasks set by teachers
  • The submission status of any tasks
  • Any comments left by the student and/or teacher
  • Any grades (where applicable)

If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:

  • If there is an issue with access to a device to complete remote education, please let us know immediately by emailing
  • We will do everything we can to support remote education and have a number of devices that we may be able to loan as well as helping to resolve any issues with connecting to the internet.
  • We recognise that some students may only be able to take part in lessons on a device with a small screen, such as a mobile phone. We are happy for students to complete any work set on paper instead of on a computer if needed.
  • Teachers will avoid setting tasks that require printing.
  • If students are completing remote education on paper rather than computer they can always upload a photo of their work. Where this is not possible, we will work with you to find a solution.
  • A government initiative has been set up so that schools can request free mobile data increases for families who do not have broadband at home or if they need extra data for devices. Three, Smarty, Virgin Mobile, EE, Tesco Mobile and Sky Mobile are all taking part in the scheme. Please get in touch with us at if you would like to take up this offer.

How will my child be taught remotely?

We use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely:

Lesson consist of a combination of narrated PowerPoints, audio guides to explain tasks, links to Recorded Lessons on Oak National Academy, video links and a variety of online learning platforms as resources such as My Maths, Tassomai and GCSE pod.

KS5 students, will receive 4 X Teams live (online) lessons for each subject during a 10-day period of Remote Learning for each subject. The other 5 lessons for each subject will be set on Satchel One. Some subjects may choose to deliver a greater number of the fortnightly allocation via Teams and this will be communicated with students.

KS4 students will receive 2 X Teams live (online) lessons during a 10-day period of Remote Learning for each subject. Year 10 & 11 will receive 1 x Teams lessons of each science subject (Biology, Chemistry and Physics). The other lessons for that subject (year group depending) will be set on Satchel One.

What happens if my child’s teacher is unwell?

If a member of teaching staff is unwell and is not able to provide remote education, your child may be sent a Learning Programme for that subject with links to independent tasks Ultimately the aim is to ensure that teaching continues in the most effective way possible until the teacher is able to resume teaching.

Engagement and feedback

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

We expect all students to engage with remote education as soon as it is required.

As parents/carers, please ensure you child follows the school day and routines of engaging with their timetabled work and can work without distraction. Where this is not possible, please let us know and we will do what we can to help.

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

Student engagement with remote learning is monitored daily as teachers can see which tasks have been submitted for each subject. Where students are not engaging, this will initially be followed up with contact home.

Where students are attending remote education (live) lessons but there are concerns with the quality or quantity of work being done, a member of staff will contact home.

How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. For example, whole-class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms are also valid and effective methods, amongst many others. Our approach to feeding back on pupil work is as follows:

  • Teachers may deliver a lesson through resources on Satchel or Microsoft Teams and set work to be completed through the remainder of the lesson. Work will be submitted via Satchel so that students know where they are up to with their assignments.
  • There is a comment function on Satchel, where teachers can mark or comment on student work.
  • Teachers are not expected to mark every piece of work in depth, but they will be checking work and addressing any errors or misconceptions with students in the following lessons.
  • We may use quizzes through online forms to assess student understanding. This provides instant student feedback and scores are recorded so that teachers can address common mistakes in future lessons.
  • For larger tasks, teachers will be able to provide feedback and reward BESt points. Feedback can be to a group or specific individual feedback to help students improve – our aim is toencourage students to reflect on their learning and the progress they’re making. We know that peer interactions can provide motivation and improve learning outcomes and as the remote learning situation continues, teachers will be looking for opportunities to share examples of work as part of the way they set tasks alongside rewarding students with BESt points to keep our students motivated in their learning.

Additional support for pupils with particular needs

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:

  • Staff use Quality First Teaching strategies to provide work appropriate to student need.
  • We can clearly track engagement of students with SEND through Satchel:One and contact is made with home when engagement is not high.
  • Students can use Satchel:One to ask their teachers for clarification on set work. Teachers are able to provide immediate feedback.
  • We provide additional support to students with an EHCP or Top Up Funding through either Teams, email or phone call.

Remote education for self-isolating pupils

Where individual pupils need to self-isolate but the majority of their peer group remains in school, how remote education is provided will likely differ from the approach for whole groups. This is due to the challenges of teaching pupils both at home and in school.

If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described above?

When it is confirmed that a student needs to self-isolate for a period of time, parents and carers will be sent an email explaining expectations.  Students will then follow their existing timetable of 5 subjects daily for the period of time they are away from school, allowing students to continue their current Learning Programme.

We provide a dedicated password protected Remote Learning page on our website for all students that contains work and resources that all students can complete. The password for this section of our website is emailed to both students and parents as soon as we are notified. Many of the subjects direct students to video lessons provided by Oak National Academy, that match the Learning Programme we are teaching in school.

Oak National Academy is an online classroom made by teachers comprising of quality video lessons and resources.  Subject Leaders have indicated which topics each year group should follow as these connect to your child’s current Learning Programme, supporting the work students will continue with when they return to the classroom.   Students will also be able to continue any homework tasks which will be set on Satchel. Your child should also email their teachers to let them know of the self-isolation. The teacher will then be able to support with specific lesson resources sent by email.

Students in Years 12 and 13 will be contacted directly by their Subject Teacher (either through the message service on Satchel One or through their school email account) explaining the tasks they need to complete during the time they are away from school.

Curriculum Implementation

The Bishops’ Blue Coat school curriculum is based on embedding our key principles and values across all areas of study, nurturing and developing our young people to explore their talents to the full within a wide and rich curriculum that provides experience and opportunities for all. We promote a seven year journey of study ensuring a broad base of learning for as long as possible before some choices are made at the end of Year 9. All our Key Stage 4 courses have progression opportunities beyond the age of 16, either into a College of Further Education or our Sixth Form, dependant on meeting entry requirements. There is a wide range and variety of courses available within the Sixth Form, together with enrichments programmes that prepare our students for the next stage, beyond the Bishops’ Blue Coat School in Higher Education, Apprenticeships or employment.

We believe that quality homework plays an important part in the learning and development of our pupils. Regular homework is set in all subjects using a specialised web-based system called ShowMyHomework. This application alerts both pupils and parents to the set homework and also tracks their progress.
